A Chapter Out Of Someone Else's Life Story
Lisa-centric, Dean/Lisa, implied Dean/Sam. 409 words, PG.

one.
It's like getting to drive a really nice car for a week while your boss is out of town and left you with his keys. It's thrilling and exciting, like being someone else for a while.

But you always know that at the end, you'll give the keys back and go back to normal, and that's not bad.

It's fun, but it's not you.

two.
He's not best sex of my life Dean here. He's Ben's father (but he's not), her husband (but he's not), a part of the family who's always been there (but he's not). Her girlfriends have asked her for all kinds of stories about him, but it's polite interest, not scandalous gossip. They think he's just another guy.

He saved the world, she thinks, sometimes, when he's asleep and she's not.

He saved the world, she thinks, sometimes, when he doesn't come home, when he's drunk, when he's too quiet.

Most of the time, he doesn't feel like a burden.

Most of the time it's nice.

three.
When Ben was three, she dated a guy named Keith. Keith was shy and polite. He looked like a guy who'd been in good shape in high school but was slowly letting himself go. He was nice, he'd hoist Ben up on his shoulders sometimes. Ben was happy, and that's always been more important than her own happiness.

Keith hit her once, during an argument, and that was it, it was over. Ben cried for what felt like a month after he left.

So that wasn't going to happen again.

four.
The worst was:
Ben: Is there someone for everyone?
Dean: I don't know. I guess maybe not.
Ben: But what about soul mates?
Dean: Yeah, some people have those.
Ben: Does mom?
Dean: I don't know.
Ben: Do you?
Dean: Yeah.

She pretends she never left the kitchen. She's not exactly surprised, she's not exactly hurt, she just understands that this is her life, and it will never be his.

five.
The truth is, it's like your friend's wife is away for the weekend and you've been having an affair with him, but you know he loves her, and he's never going to leave her. And there's this weekend of pretending, but it's like playing house when you were a kid.

And then suddenly it's over and your boss is saying, I don't know if you remember--

And you're saying:
Lisa: Sam.
