longsufferingly: (May find it quite explosive)

Fic for [livejournal.com profile] xenachakram12! This is Jensen's first meeting with Jared from the Going to Hell 'verse, complete with slate-cracking.

Of course, Jensen has heard about the orphan boy.

It takes a lot of control for him to not visit; he thinks it's nice that Jeffrey and Jim have found a way to extend their family, something most people don't see as strange. His own father whispers that it's sinful to allow an orphan into such an environment and that the boy will undoubtedly turn out wicked.

Jensen thinks it's sinful to worry about two decent men taking in a farmhand out of Christian charity when one's own wife is dying, but he can tell some of it is his father's stress.

Still, he doesn't visit.

He sees Jeffrey around town, as he always had, every now and then, and he seems happy. He says the boy--Jared--talks up a storm, and the house is much livelier. He's good on the farm and learned how to sew somewhere, and he thinks Jensen will like him.

"You'll meet him soon enough in school, I reckon," he says, with a small question in his voice.

"I reckon," Jensen agrees. "I'm giving my mother another week, but if she's really better, I'll be starting up again."

"I'm glad she's doing better," says Jeffrey.

Jensen's mother hates Jeffrey, and Jensen's never thought Jeffrey liked her much either, but he sounds genuine enough.

Jensen's parents could learn a thing or two about Christian charity from Jeffrey.

He doesn't exactly have expectations of Jared. All he knows is that Jared is talkative and outgoing and has befriended Chad Murray. He doesn't expect them to be best friends.

He doesn't expect that first moment he sees Jared Padalecki to be like a hit to his chest, but there he is, a few years younger than Jensen but still a head taller than everyone else, walking with Chad.

He doesn't expect Jared to be perfect.

They haven't seen him yet, and he returns his attention to the girls who are chattering at him. He likes them, he does--he's happy to see everyone again. But there's so much batting of eyelashes and asking him if he's gotten taller that he can't be interested in, and he can't ever tell them that. And he can't tell them he just wants to go up to the orphan boy from Jim and Jeffrey's and be his best friend.

Chad and Jared get closer, and he pretends to just notice them, throwing a wave at Chad.

"Hey, Murray!" he calls. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Jared! He's Jim and Jeffrey's new orphan."

Jared looks at him fully, not quite smiling, but Jensen gets stuck on the white of his teeth, the slant of his eyes, and a wave of longing hits him so hard he thinks he might fall. He wants.

Jared must realize something isn't right, because he looks away and stomps into the classroom, Chad following confusedly behind him.

Jensen tries not to follow.

"Are you all right?" asks Sandy McCoy, stealing Jensen's gaze back.

"Is the new boy nice?" he asks, and Sandy starts telling him how Jared is wonderful and kind, and Jensen likes Sandy, but he can already see ahead into a future where she and Jared are happily married, and he doesn't have anyone at all.

Jensen tries to concentrate on his schoolwork, but he can't help glancing up and watching the back of Jared's head, trying to catch glances of his face as he talks to Chad. They seem to be arguing about something, although Jensen can't figure out what.

Jensen is hunkered down, trying to get through his sums, when Mr. Dunn finally says, "Jared Padalecki. Since I see you are incapable of concentrating when in such close proximity to Chad Murray, I will remove temptation. Go and sit with Jensen Ackles."

Jensen has a moment of utter, blank terror, no idea at all what to do, and then Jared is next to him, staring down at his slate resolutely, and Jensen just wants Jared to look at him.

So he does something he will regret for the rest of his life.

He reaches over, tugs on Jared's hair, trying not to linger on the feel of it between his fingers, and hisses, "Scarecrow!"

He knows it was stupid, and the apology is on the tip of his tongue, but Jared is already in motion, and suddenly something breaks on Jensen's head, and Jared is holding pieces of his slate, and looking at Jensen like he has never hated anyone more.

"I'm--" he starts, trying to apologize, but Mr. Dunn is already telling Jared his punishment, and Jensen doesn't get a chance to say anything.

He's ruined it.
