That being said, sometimes a story needs a long author note.
The thing is, the fic in this post is not really a J2 AU. It's Jared and Jensen in an AU setting, but it is actually a fanfic for Lois Lowry's The Giver. The story presupposes knowledge of The Giver, and after a lot of debating with myself, I decided to not include a primer for those who haven't read it. I'm not saying it's impossible to follow if you haven't read the book (I really have no idea), but you're honestly not my target audience.
I almost did not post this fic, because it feels nearly blasphemous to me to make this book, which was hugely important to my childhood, into just another J2 AU. Which is why I want to stress--that's not what I was trying to do. Whether or not it is what I did, well, god knows authorial intent means very little. But my intention was for this to be as much about the world of The Giver as it is about Jared and Jensen's relationship.
tl;dr: this may not be fic for you, either because you have not read The Giver, or because you have and this is not something you're interested in. And that's fine. This is pretty much a fic for me, and I enjoyed writing it. If it is a fic for you, I hope you enjoy reading it.
